Jul i Geografisk Have

Christmas in Christiansfeld is something quite special…

Welcome to Christiansfeld near Kolding
— the small town with a big story, where the stars light up and the honey-cakes smell sweet.
When darkness falls, the characteristic Herrnhut stars are hung in the windows of this UNESCO town. Here, history walks side by side with the festive season – from cobbled streets and golden facades to the scent of freshly-baked honey-cakes from the town’s famous bakeries. When the Moravian Brethren founded Christiansfeld at the end of the 18th century, they brought the recipe with them — inspired by German baking traditions. Here, the cake was refined and passed on, becoming so special that people travelled here just to taste it. Visit the town’s bakeries, where you can settle down with a cup of coffee and a piece of honey-cake — or take home a honey-heart as a sweet souvenir from one of Denmark’s most historic towns, alive and breathing its traditions.

The Story of the Star
In Christiansfeld, for generations, a very special Advent star has been hung — a handmade paper star with 25 points, known as the Herrnhut star. It was originally made in the town of Herrnhut in Germany and came to Denmark via the Moravian Brethren in Christiansfeld, where it still lights up windows and streets during the Christmas season today. Every year a special Annual Star (Årsstjerne) is issued in a new colour and limited edition — a beautiful tradition that is both collectible and living cultural heritage.

City tour - Star moments
Look forward to a festive December experience in Christiansfeld – the town where Christmas feels truly special. Discover the beautiful Herrnhut stars lighting the streets, and the scent of fresh honey-cakes leading you through the town’s unique architecture and story. On the tour you’ll hear about the Moravian Brethren, the town’s special layout and the traditions that have made Christiansfeld so extraordinary – especially at Christmas time.
