Before 1877, Filskov was a sparsely populated corner of the large Sønder Omme parish. After 1877, Filskov developed into a village like many others on the nutrient-poor sandy soils of West Jutland. The heathland was transformed into farmland and forests. After 1917, Filskov became a thriving railway town. It gained its own parish, and in 1947 it became an independent municipality. However, decline soon followed: in 1970, the municipality merged with Grindsted, and in 1971 the railway was closed. Good ideas became a necessity.

In 1979, the new local council "Kontaktudvalget" was formed, leading to many new initiatives: a clubhouse for the Filskov Sports Association in 1983, a children's house in 1991, a district heating plant based on manure in 1992, the economic development company Filskovs Fremtid Aps in 1995, a new grocery store in 2010, a culture center with a sports hall in 2004, the private care home Filskov Friplejehjem in 2014, the private school and kindergarten Filskov Friskole og Børnehave, and youth housing in 2015.
