Did you know...
...that six LEGO® bricks in the 2x4 size can be combined in 915 million ways?
The little brick has become a symbol of the creativity and innovative spirit that have also shaped Billund’s development. While many Danish towns grew around trade, a harbour or the railway, Billund has largely grown with LEGO® — from Ole Kirk Kristiansen’s wooden toys in 1932 to the international destination the town is today. Later came the airport, new attractions and a town centre shaped by play, design and big ambitions.
What began in a small workshop on the heath has left its mark on the whole town and made Billund something truly special in Denmark.
A very special place to stay

Why LEGOLAND® is in Billund
It was no coincidence that the world’s first LEGOLAND park was located in Billund. The story began with the LEGO factory, which was already attracting thousands of visitors every year in the early 1960s. They came to see the models, the workshop and the ideas behind the bricks that were already making their way around the world. As pressure from the growing number of visitors increased, the idea emerged to move the experience outdoors — and turn it into something bigger.
In 1961, a private LEGO airfield was established to make it easier for business partners and employees to travel to and from the town. In 1964, it became Billund Airport with public traffic, and four years later — on 7 June 1968 — LEGOLAND opened. In this way, the factory, the airport and the park grew as three parts of the same development: from a small heathland village to an international destination.
LEGOLAND quickly became a success. In its very first season, 625,000 guests visited the park, and today it has more than 45 rides and attractions. The heart of the park is still Miniland, which alone is built from more than 20 million LEGO bricks. And the story does not end in Billund: today, there are 11 LEGOLAND resorts around the world, including the newest one in Shanghai.
Once there was something else...
Before the LEGO® adventure, Billund was a small heathland village with farms, modest agriculture and a landscape that set its own conditions. If you want to understand that part of the story, MARK and Karensminde Museum Farm are a good place to begin.

Experience a taste of history at Mark near Billund
The Mark museum includes Karensminde Museumsgård, a place where families with children can experience a proper old-fashioned farmhouse from the 1920s to the 1950s and get a taste, and feel, of what living on a farm was really like.
A good tip for your trip
If you want to experience a different side of Billund beyond the major attractions, start with a walk along the Playline and continue through Billund Sculpture Park. The Playline is actually visible throughout the town: the route is marked directly in the paving with thermoplastic graphics, guiding you through streets and urban spaces while linking the centre, attractions and green areas. Along the way, the experience shifts between town life, architecture and nature, and in Billund Sculpture Park, art and landscape go hand in hand along the path by Billund Brook.

Nature and cultural experiences
A landscape shaped by sand and wind
At Grene Sande, you will discover a wilder and more distinctive side of the Billund area. This natural landscape is a large inland sand drift dating back to the late glacial period, with inland dunes, open wind-cut terrain and exposed surfaces with very poor soil.
It gives the area a character you might not expect to find here — and that is exactly what makes it such an interesting detour for a walk, if you would like to experience more of the landscape that shaped the area long before Billund became known for something very different.
