Welcome to Billund

Billund is the town where a small carpenter’s workshop on the Jutland heath became the beginning of a LEGO® adventure now known around the world. Today, you’ll find the original LEGOLAND®, LEGO® House in the heart of town and plenty of signs of the playful creativity that has shaped Billund.

But Billund’s story began long before LEGO®. At MARK | Museumsgården Karensminde, you can discover what life was like on the old heathlands, while the countryside, small towns and villages around Billund reveal another side of the area.

The story of LEGOLAND® is closely connected to Billund’s development. By the early 1960s, thousands of visitors were already coming to the town to visit the LEGO factory. LEGO established a private airfield in 1961, Billund Airport opened three years later, and in 1968 the world’s first LEGOLAND® opened its gates.

The factory, airport and theme park grew side by side, helping transform a small town on the heath into the international destination Billund is today.

… that just six 2x4 LEGO® bricks can be combined in more than 915 million different ways? The little brick has become a symbol of the creativity that has shaped Billund since Ole Kirk Kristiansen began making toys here in 1932.

The Playline connects different parts of Billund and makes it easy to explore the town on foot. You can follow the route through the colours, lines and dots incorporated into the streets. It leads through urban spaces and green areas before continuing to the Sculpture Park along Billund Bæk, where art and nature become part of the walk.

Not far from Billund, the landscape begins to change. At Grene Sande, you can walk through heathland, woodland and open sandy areas in a landscape shaped by wind and sand over generations. Follow the trails, enjoy the quiet among the trees and discover a side of the Billund area that feels a world away from the town’s major attractions.
