History & Culture
KONGERNES JELLING
The royal power center Kongernes Jelling was built to impress everyone. An area the size of 20 football fields was fortified with a 4-meter-high palisade. Step into history. See Denmark’s “birth certificate.” Experience how royal power manifested itself with overwhelming force.
Kongernes Jelling still captivates today. Bold storytelling invites you into a dialogue with history. Artist Ingvar Cronhammar’s installation illustrates the size of the Viking fortress. Inside, new technology and chalk drawings draw you further into the story.
This is a place of records. Here you find the Viking Age’s largest construction, the world’s largest rune stone, and the largest ship setting. The palisades alone required more than 4,000 full-grown oak trees – a massive effort that cost strength, limbs, and lives.

KOLDINGHUS – FROM ROYAL CASTLE TO NEW DESIGN
In the mid-1200s, the king built Koldinghus to guard the border between Denmark and Schleswig. After a fatal fire in 1808, the castle lay in ruins. Today it has been reconstructed in a way that makes the ruin itself part of the attraction, while housing a powerhouse museum of art and culture.
Through the centuries, Koldinghus was rebuilt many times, often after fires. The fire of 1808 left it in ruins for nearly 100 years before reconstruction began.
Architects Inger and Johannes Exner decided to let the ruin remain visible, using wood and steel in the new supporting structures. Their design was awarded the Europa Nostra Prize in 1993.

CHRISTIANSFELD
In 1771, the Moravian Church in Herrnhut was invited by King Christian VII to build a settlement in Christiansfeld. They accepted and built a town from scratch. Following their traditional town plan, the settlement is so well-preserved that Christiansfeld is today on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The invitation may have puzzled the Moravians. The previous king, Christian VI, had expelled them. But in the spirit of the Enlightenment, Christian VII welcomed them back, hoping they would bring growth and prosperity to Schleswig.
By the early 1800s, more than 700 people and 21 different crafts had moved to the town. Among them must have been bakers, since Christiansfeld is still famous for its gingerbread.
