Welcome to Kolding
History, culture, world heritage and design
Kolding’s streets are full of atmosphere and history, and time has left its mark on the city. You do not have to visit a museum to experience its history – it is also present in the urban space itself. From Akseltorv, named after the axles on farmers’ wagons, to the oldest houses in Helligkorsgade and the traces of the Battle of Kolding, the stories are never far away. At the same time, Kolding is also a lively city with culture, shopping, green breathing spaces and great places to eat and drink.
Kolding is, in other words, for those who want to immerse themselves in history and culture, and for those who simply want a good day out with experiences, good food and time to explore.

Did you know...
... that Kolding’s old history can still be seen right in the middle of the city? At Akseltorv you will find traces of the old market town, where farmers’ wagons once rolled in for market days, and just a few steps away Koldinghus reminds visitors of the city’s importance as a royal castle on the border. That is exactly why Kolding also became part of the First Schleswig War, and in Helligkorsgade you can still see a cannonball from the Battle of Kolding in 1849 built into one of the city’s oldest houses.

A good tip if you want to understand Kolding
Koldinghus is a good place to start if you want to understand Kolding. The castle was built as a border fortress to the south and later became known as Jutland’s last royal castle. Just below it lies Staldgården, now part of Museum Kolding, where the castle’s horses were once stabled. Together, a visit here makes it easier to understand Kolding as both a market town, a royal town and a place where history still echoes through the walls.
